Trust & Safety Starter Kit

What Trust & Safety is

Trust & Safety is the work of protecting people from harm when they use something online. Social media is part of it, and so are online stores, dating apps, games, banking and payment apps, ride-sharing and AI chatbots. The harm might be a scam, a stolen account, a fake seller, harassment, or something much worse. The people who fight it write rules, review cases, investigate bad actors, build detection tools, study the data and handle the legal side.

It's a young field, and every company sets it up differently. One calls it Integrity, the next calls it Community, another calls it Safety. It might report to Legal, Operations, Product or the CEO. There's no standard job ladder and no agreed list of skills, which is why the same job pays differently and is described differently everywhere you look. (If that sounds chaotic, it is. You get used to it.)

What stays the same is the basic puzzle: a rule written ahead of time, a real situation that doesn't quite fit it, and a decision that has to be made anyway, often thousands of times a day. Everything below is here to help you figure out whether that's a job you'd like, and how to get one.

What these teams do

Nine kinds of work. Hardly any company does all nine, and no two split them up the same way.

  • Content moderationChecking what people post against the rules, and taking down things like hate speech, harassment and threats.
  • Policy developmentWriting the rules for what's allowed, then explaining and defending every word of them.
  • User support and urgent problemsHandling reports of abuse, people asking for a second look at a ban, and the emergency that shows up at two in the morning.
  • Fraud detection and preventionStopping scams, stolen accounts, fake payments and identity theft, partly with software and partly with people.
  • Child safetyProtecting kids from abuse and predators online, including checking ages and working with police.
  • Misinformation and fake campaignsFalse or misleading content, and the organized groups spreading it on purpose, especially around elections, health and emergencies.
  • Spam, bots and fake accountsAutomated accounts, spam, people copying data in bulk, and groups gaming the system together. Plus spotting the next trick before it spreads.
  • Compliance and legalFollowing the laws that now cover this work, like Europe's Digital Services Act, the UK's Online Safety Act, and privacy laws in Europe and the US.
  • Planning for the worstGetting ready for a data leak or a big crisis, and leading the response when one happens.
