About GIFCT
GIFCT, the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, is a tech-led nonprofit organization designed to prevent terrorists and violent extremists from exploiting digital platforms. It brings together technology companies and works with governments, civil society, practitioners, and academia. Its main technical product is the Hash-Sharing Database, which lets members identify if and where terrorists or violent extremists are attempting to exploit their platforms.
GIFCT was founded in 2017 by a consortium of companies led by Facebook (now Meta), Google/YouTube, Microsoft and Twitter (now X). Its membership has grown beyond the founding companies to include over 40 platforms.
The database began as a shared hash database of ISIS-related material and expanded to a wider array of violent extremist content after the Christchurch mosque attack. The Global Network on Extremism and Technology is described as its academic research arm.
