Global Network Initiative Principles
Multi stakeholder principles on freedom of expression and privacy, with independent assessment.
About Global Network Initiative Principles
The Global Network Initiative sets a global standard for responsible company decision-making to promote and advance freedom of expression and privacy rights across the technology ecosystem. It brings together key stakeholders into four constituencies with equal voice: academics, civil society, companies, and investors.
The initiative was launched in 2008 to set a standard for how technology companies should respect the freedom of expression and privacy rights of their users when addressing government requests and restrictions. Its stated scope includes government efforts to push censorship deeper into the tech stack by targeting demands to digital equipment and infrastructure providers. Since 2008, it has convened stakeholders across regions including South and South/East Asia, Africa, MENA, Latin America, Europe, and North America.

How it works
GNI brings together companies, civil society, academics and investors around principles for protecting freedom of expression and privacy when governments demand content removal or user data. Member companies undergo periodic independent assessments of how they implement the principles. It's the reference framework for handling government demands.
