About NIST AI Risk Management Framework
NIST developed the AI Risk Management Framework, led by its Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) AI Program and developed in collaboration with the private and public sectors, to help manage risks to individuals, organizations, and society associated with artificial intelligence. The framework is intended for voluntary use to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems.
The framework was released on January 26, 2023, after a consensus-driven, open, transparent, and collaborative process that included a Request for Information, several draft versions for public comments, and multiple workshops. On July 26, 2024, NIST released a generative artificial intelligence profile for the framework, identified as NIST-AI- 600-1. On March 30, 2023, NIST launched the Trustworthy and Responsible AI Resource Center to facilitate implementation of the framework.

How it works
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary structure for managing the risks of AI systems. It organizes the work into four functions (Govern, Map, Measure, Manage) with a playbook of concrete actions under each, and a companion profile for generative AI. It's not a certification; it's a way to document that you identified risks, measured them and acted, in language regulators and auditors recognize.
For a T&S team it's the natural frame for documenting automated moderation, classifiers and any AI touching users.
