Key skills at this level: owns a safety product area and its roadmap against real constraints, prioritizes between harm reduction, user experience and engineering cost, and instruments for the metric that matters rather than the one that is easy.
Why this level
Estimated from the posting rather than stated by the employer: the title reads as P3 · asks for 5+ years · posts $181k to $217k base in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The role, in T&S terms
Written by the T&S Network from Fastly's posting.
Owns the product definition for what API traffic is allowed on Fastly's edge platform and how that traffic is enforced. The work covers customer API discovery and inventory, schema generation and validation, and request-path controls like ACLs, allowlists, rate limiting, and the API gateway, extended to AI agents and MCP servers. The team sits in Core Infrastructure Product Management, with the goal of moving customers from not knowing their APIs to enforcing a declared model.
What you'd do
- Set strategy and roadmap for defining allowed API traffic, from discovery through enforcement in the request path.
- Shape API discovery and inventory so customers learn what APIs they actually run.
- Own schema definition, generation, and validation, and keep specs accurate as customer APIs change.
- Define ACLs, allowlists, rate limiting, and gateway controls as primitives other products can adopt.
- Define how agents and MCP servers are identified, authorized, and held to allowed behavior.
- Push product positions through to decisions with engineering, product, and partner teams.
What it asks for
- Five or more years running products or leading product work, ideally in API, security, or platform infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of API schemas and specs, gateway behavior, and allowlist versus detection-based models.
- Track record of building shared capabilities used by more than one product or team.
- Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and with executives and customers.
- Experience with agent identity, OAuth 2.1 delegated authorization, and MCP (preferred).
- Experience with request-path enforcement such as WASM, eBPF, OPA, or Rego (preferred).
Worth knowing
- Must be available during core business hours.
