About Strava
Strava is an American internet service for tracking physical exercise which incorporates social networking features. It started out tracking mostly outdoor cycling and running activities using GPS data, but now incorporates several dozen other exercise types, including indoor activities. Activities can be recorded using the mobile app or from devices manufactured by third parties such as Garmin, Coros, Google Fit, Suunto, Apple Health, and Wahoo. Strava Metro is a program marketed to city planners.
Strava was founded in 2009 by Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath, along with several other co-founders, and is based in San Francisco, California. By 2020, it had more than 50 million users. In December 2023, Strava announced Michael Martin, a former YouTube executive, as its new CEO. In March 2022, it stopped operating in Russia and Belarus.
In January 2023, Strava acquired Fatmap, which builds 3D maps used for outdoor activities. In May 2025, it acquired the running app Runna and the cycling app Breakaway.
