About Uli
Uli, whose name means chisel in Tamil, is a tool that aims to hand power over to users most affected by online gender-based violence. Uli was launched in 2021 as a joint project between The Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) and Tattle Civic Tech. It aims to build safer online spaces in India by collectivizing women and gender minorities.
Uli creates representative data and tools for detection of online abuse and connects people to support in times of need. Uli has joined the UNICEF FemTech Cohort. In its second year, Uli is evolving as a user-facing tool, as well as a set of resources that researchers, Trust and Safety teams, professionals, and journalists can use in their workflows.

How it works
Uli is a browser extension from Tattle, an Indian civic tech nonprofit, that helps people (especially women) manage gendered abuse on social media. It hides or blurs posts containing slurs from a crowdsourced list in Hindi, Tamil and Indian English, lets users archive abuse for reporting, and gives them a machine learning filter tuned to the abuse patterns Tattle documented. The slur list and the dataset behind the model are open.
For platforms it's useful as a source of non English abuse vocabulary and as an example of user side moderation.
