About Ranking Digital Rights

Ranking Digital Rights promotes freedom of expression and privacy on the internet by creating global standards and incentives for companies to respect and protect users’ rights. The organization was founded in 2013 by Rebecca MacKinnon, author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom. Its work guides policymakers, investors, and advocates seeking to shape a digital public sphere in which networked technologies respect human rights.

The organization evaluates 26 digital platforms and telecom companies on how well they uphold human rights. It is the only organization in the world that produces an open dataset on companies’ commitments and policies affecting users’ freedom of expression and privacy. It also created CLARITI, which was developed as part of the Engaging Tech for Internet Freedom programme.

How it works

Ranking Digital Rights publishes an annual scorecard of the biggest tech and telecom companies on how their governance, policies and disclosures affect users' freedom of expression and privacy. Each company is scored against a public methodology with dozens of indicators, and the data is downloadable.

For a T&S team it's a benchmark: the indicators spell out what "good" disclosure looks like around content rules, enforcement data, algorithmic systems and appeals. Many transparency report improvements at large platforms trace back to RDR indicators.
