About Perception

Thorn makes Perception, a set of perceptual hashing tools. Perception was initially developed at Thorn as part of its work to eliminate child sexual abuse material from the internet. It is intended for perceptual hashing research, development, and production use.

The package can be installed with pip install perception. The repository is released under the Apache-2.0 license.

How it works

Perception is a Python library from Thorn that gives you one interface over many perceptual hashes: PDQ, pHash, dHash, aHash, wavelet, and video hashes like TMK, plus tools for benchmarking them against transformations (crops, rotations, recompression) so you can pick the right one and threshold for your data. It also includes a "hash from URL" batch pipeline.

It's a convenience and evaluation layer, not a new hash. Use it to prototype and to measure before committing to a hash in production.
