About Take It Down

Take It Down is a free service that can help people remove or stop the online sharing of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images or videos taken of them when they were under 18 years old. Take It Down is a service provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Take It Down is for people who have images or videos of themselves nude, partially nude, or in sexually explicit situations taken when they were under the age of 18 that they believe have been or will be shared online.

Take It Down works on public or unencrypted online platforms that have agreed to participate. A person anywhere in the world can use the service if they were under 18 when the images were taken. A person who is over 18 now can still use the service for images taken when they were under 18.

How it works

Take It Down is NCMEC's service for minors (and adults who were minors in the images) to get intimate images removed. The person selects the image on their own device, a hash is computed locally, and only the hash goes to NCMEC. Participating platforms check uploads against the hash list and remove matches. The image itself never leaves the person's phone.

For a platform, participating means integrating the hash list into your matching pipeline and committing to act on hits. It's the youth focused sibling of StopNCII.
