About SpamAssassin

Apache SpamAssassin is a project of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). It is an open source anti-spam platform that gives system administrators a filter to classify email and block spam, which the page defines as unsolicited bulk email.

The Mail::SpamAssassin classes can be used on a wide variety of email systems, naming procmail, sendmail, Postfix, and qmail. It is distributed as free software under the same terms and conditions as other open-source packages, such as the Apache web server. A 2019 news item marked the project's 18th birthday on 2019-09-05.

How it works

SpamAssassin is the Apache Foundation's mail filter. It scores each message with hundreds of rules (header anomalies, known spam phrases, URL blocklists, DNS based checks) plus a Bayesian classifier you train on your own mail, and anything over a threshold is tagged or quarantined. Rules are updated regularly and you can add your own.

It's been running mail servers for over twenty years. It's email specific, but its approach (weighted rules plus a trainable classifier) is the template for a lot of platform spam systems.
