About Content Credentials

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, or C2PA, provides an open technical standard for publishers, creators and consumers to establish the origin and edits of digital content. Content Credentials can benefit publishers, content creators, news media and policymakers.

The C2PA joined the efforts of The Content Authenticity and Project Origin to focus exclusively on the development of open, global technical standards.

How it works

Content Credentials is the consumer name for the C2PA standard: a way to attach a signed, tamper evident manifest to an image, video or audio file recording where it came from and what was done to it. A camera or an AI generator signs the capture; each editing tool appends a signed record; a viewer can verify the chain. Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, Leica, Nikon and others ship it.

For a platform, the open source c2pa tooling lets you read and display credentials on upload, and preserve them rather than stripping metadata. It doesn't detect fakes; it proves provenance where it exists.
