The role, in T&S terms

Written by the T&S Network from Common Sense Media's posting.

Develops and maintains the AI safety standards that Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute uses to assess youth-facing AI products and platforms. The role turns input from experts, practitioners, evaluators and industry working groups into published, documented standards, working under the Head of AI & Digital Assessments.

What you'd do

  • Write and upkeep the Institute's safety standards for AI aimed at young users, covering youth-facing products and platforms.
  • Take notes and ask questions during expert convenings, working group sessions and comment processes.
  • Synthesize input, including conflicting views, into standards positions and record points of consensus, disagreement and rationale.
  • Work with evaluators to convert standards into rubrics and protocols that can be tested and repeated.
  • Flag gaps between written standards and what can be operationalized, and work with the Head to resolve them.
  • Keep public documentation of process, decisions, input gathered and version history current.
  • Manage timelines and deliverables across several standards tracks and brief the Head on progress and escalations.

What it asks for

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required.
  • Four to six years in policy, standards work, regulatory affairs, research or a nearby field.
  • Demonstrated contribution to formal standards, guidelines, frameworks or policy documents in a multi-stakeholder setting.
  • Grounding in child or adolescent development, youth mental health, or a related clinical or developmental field.
  • Exceptional written communication and project management skills.
  • A graduate degree in developmental or clinical psychology, public health or similar is preferred.
  • Experience in AI safety, technology policy or emerging technology governance (preferred).

Worth knowing

  • Full-time, exempt role.
  • Subject to a criminal background check as a condition of offer.
