PolicyKit

Open source toolkit for building and running governance rules in online communities.

About PolicyKit

PolicyKit is an open-source tool for community governance in online communities. It lets community members write governance procedures and carry them out automatically on their home platforms. Its framework describes governance as a series of actions and policies, written in short programming scripts. Its templates include ranked voting, board voting, a benevolent dictator model and majority voting. Users can customize and merge voting templates in a no-code editor.

The framework was inspired by the Nobel economist Elinor Ostrom. The project is building an editor, software libraries and connectors to community platforms. Its funders include the National Science Foundation, the Mina Foundation, OneProject, Facebook, the Office of Naval Research and Grant for the Web.

Contributors to the open-source project include Amy Zhang, Leijie Wang and Michael Bernstein.
