Mercari is a C2C marketplace where individuals can buy and sell items. Its main business is the planning, development, and operation of the Mercari marketplace app. Merpay is a mobile payment service within the Mercari app. Merpay users can spend their sales proceeds from Mercari, or money loaded via their bank account, to shop at many places.

The company was founded on February 1, 2013. Shintaro Yamada established Mercari, Inc. in February 2013 and serves as its CEO.
