About Mastodon gGmbH
Mastodon gGmbH is the German entity behind Mastodon, a non-profit that develops the Mastodon software. Mastodon is free and open-source software. Each Mastodon server is an independent entity, able to interoperate with others to form one global social network. Built on open web protocols, it can speak with any other platform that implements ActivityPub.
Mastodon started in 2016 as an open-source project by Eugen Rochko. The first public launch occurred in October 2016. The project was officially incorporated as a gGmbH, a German form of non-profit LLC, in 2021. Mastodon GmbH is registered in Berlin, Germany.
In 2025, the team began the process of moving the project to a new foundation. Mastodon, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity in the United States that supports the growth and operational capabilities of Mastodon.
