Linden Lab

Second Life is a 3D virtual world developed entirely by its users. Creators on the platform profit from the sale of millions of virtual items on the marketplace. Its other products have included Sansar, Blocksworld and Patterns.

Linden Lab was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in San Francisco with an additional office in Atlanta. Philip Rosedale founded it and was its original CEO. It launched Second Life in 2003.

The company was founded as Linden Research, and its name comes from the street where its premises were first based, 333 Linden Street in San Francisco. In 2019 it unveiled Tilia, a registered money services business and licensed money transmitter. In April 2024, Thunes announced an agreement to acquire Tilia LLC.
