Nebraska's Conversational AI Safety Act puts minor safeguards on public chatbots from July 2027
259days
Until July 1, 2027
Act becomes operative
Public chatbots in Nebraska tell minor account holders they are AI, with a notice at the start of each session and every three hours, and disclose it whenever a reasonable person could be misled. For minors they block sexual content, claims of being human, simulated romance and unpredictable rewards, and offer privacy tools to minors and parents. Operators need a self-harm referral protocol, and the Attorney General can seek damages and penalties from $1,000 per violation up to $500,000 per operator.
Build: Ship AI notices for minor accounts, content blocks, parental privacy tools and a crisis referral protocol before 1 Jul 2027.
Who it reaches
It reaches generative AI services with users in the US, at any size. Public conversational AI services. Customer service, business, narrow-topic and research tools and voice assistants are excluded.
Lands on Policy & Standards, Product, Engineering and Legal & Regulatory.
