Iowa sets AI disclosure, minor safety and self-harm rules for public chatbots from July 2027

260days

Until July 1, 2027

SF 2417 duties apply

HighSevere and likely

Public chatbots in Iowa tell minor account holders they are AI, with a notice at the start of each conversation and every three hours, and disclose it to anyone who could think they're human. For minors they block sexual content, claims of being human, simulated romance and unpredictable rewards, and offer privacy tools to minors and parents. Every operator needs a self-harm referral protocol, and the Attorney General enforces it at $1,000 per violation, up to $500,000 per operator.

Build: Build AI notices for minor accounts, sexual content and romance blocks, parental privacy tools and a crisis referral protocol before 1 Jul 2027.
