Connecticut requires provenance data on AI content now, and chatbot safeguards from 2027

Companion chatbot duties apply

CriticalSevere and certain

From 1 Oct 2026, providers with over 1 million monthly users attach tamper-resistant provenance data to content created or materially changed by AI. From 1 Jan 2027, companion chatbots use self-harm protocols, disclose they are not human (hourly for minors, every three hours for adults), block romantic, violent and disordered-eating content for minors, and give parents screen-time and privacy tools. The Attorney General enforces it as an unfair trade practice.

Build: Check that generated images, video and audio carry provenance data now, and plan the chatbot safeguards for minors before January 2027.

Who it reaches

It reaches generative AI and user-to-user services with users in the US, at any size. Provenance at 1 million or more monthly users; chatbot duties for companion chatbots serving Connecticut users.
