About Lemmy
Lemmy is a free and open-source social news aggregation software for running self-hosted discussion forums. The servers that run it are known as instances, and they communicate with each other using the ActivityPub protocol. Users on individual instances submit posts with links, text, or pictures to user-created forums called communities. It has been described as a federated alternative to Reddit.
Lemmy was created by the user Dessalines on GitHub in February 2019 and licensed under the Affero General Public License. The Lemmyverse consists of hundreds of interconnected servers operated by different people. As of 22 December 2025, it had 455 instances with approximately 48,600 monthly active users. The largest instances are lemmy.world and lemmy.ml.
Lemmy is not controlled by any company, and its development is funded solely by donations.
