Safety by Design: An All-Remote Hackathon!

Mar 26, 2024

NEW T&S HACKATHON ALERT 🚨 ! We are thrilled to announce a 100% virtual hackathon focused on Safety by Design. The T&S Hackathon team, supported by the Australia eSafety Commissioner, will be running a 24-hour hackathon where you'll brainstorm solutions that answer the prompt "How can we evolve and increase adoption of Safety by Design?"

The Safety by Design framework is used by hundreds of platforms, big and small, and impacts billions of users. So consider this your opportunity to play a key role in ensuring it's easier to discover, implement, and updated to reflect emerging trends.

To participate, you must apply and be accepted into the program.

DATE & TIMES

The hackathon is free to participate in and will take place at the below times:

Welcome & Overview [April 22 @ 2-3pm PT / 5-6pm ET / 10-11pm BST / 7-8am AEST (April 23)]
24-Hour Small Group Work [April 22 @ 3pm PT / 6pm ET / 11pm BST / 8am AEST (April 23)]

PROMPT & GROUPS

The T&S Hackathon will be focused on answering the following question: “How can we evolve and increase adoption of Safety by Design?”

To answer this question, all participants will self-select into 1 of 3 groups:

Safety by Design Evolution – how can Safety by Design evolve to cover emerging tech and threats like AI? What changes need to be made?
Safety by Design Implementation – how can we make it easier for organizations to adopt Safety by Design? What’s working? What are the roadblocks?
Safety by Design Awareness – how can increase awareness of Safety by Design globally? What are creative ways to improve awareness and adoption?

HOW IT WORKS

Once you submit your application and it is reviewed by the organizers, you will be placed into an appropriate group. We will do our best to accommodate both your timezone needs and group preference. Each group will have 24 hours to brainstorm and develop a solution that answers the prompt. Each group can work in any way they choose (Zoom, Discord, Email, WhatsApp, as much synchronous vs asynchronous as desired, etc.) A single member of the each small group will present the group’s solution live on Zoom (all members are welcome to attend, but there will be one presenter per group). Judges will review and select the top solutions.

The Hackathon operates under Chatham House Rule, is off-the-record, and all participants are acting as private individuals. See the Code of Conduct for more information. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide financial assistance at this time.

Applications must be submitted by EOD Wednesday April 17, 2024. You will be notified of your acceptance on a rolling basis.
